Jared McLeod English Mr. Segars 22 Oct 08 The Wild World of Sports Fans America is filled with sports. For example, football, basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, and tennis, just to name a few. All sports and sports teams have one thing in common: They all have fans.
There are many different kinds of fans. All of the different characteristics of fans can basically be boiled down to three categories. These categories include the loyal fans, the disloyal fans, and the bandwagon fans. Some of these three categories can coincide with one another, but they are all different in some way. The support of the fans is what keeps a team together, and how the fans react to the ups and downs of their team affects the future of that particular organization. First of all, there are the loyal fans.
This is the type of fan I classify myself as. The loyal fans are the kinds of fans that cheer on their team, no matter how horrible they are. These fans stick with their team through thick and thin, hoping that they will succeed, even if, at the moment, they are not doing so. For example, I am an Alabama fan. But now, if you turn on College Gameday on Saturday mornings or look at the latest BCS rankings, we are considered one of the best teams classification essay on sports fans the country right now.
But the Alabama Crimson Tide this year has made the loyal fans proud. The best examples of loyal fans are the fans of the Chicago Cubs. Despite good things, classification essay on sports fans, such as Sammy Sosa and his three years of sixty plus home runs, there were always little things, like the infamous Steve Bartman mix-up, that kept the Cubs from going to the World Series.
Yet, there so many Chicago Cubs fans still out there. The opposite of a true fan is the disloyal fan. For example, I know of many Tennessee fans at my school who do not claim their team because of the bad record that they have. That, to me, is disloyal. Some of these fans decide to go on to another team, also making them a bandwagon fan. Why do these fans do this? Classification essay on sports fans they truly love the team that they support than they should back them up no classification essay on sports fans what.
The truth is, not every fan is willing to wait for a team to play better. The fans want a good team and they want it now. A disloyal fan is the fan that will try to find another team, one classification essay on sports fans looks more promising. This fan does so because he or she feels let down by the team they love. They would rather go to their next favorite team and forget all about their old team.
Some disloyal fans will leave a team, but when the team gains success again, they will suddenly be big fans again. An example of these kinds of disloyal fans might be some of the fans of the Tennessee Titans. This year, however, they are off to an undefeated start.
There are probably many Titans fans that decided to give them another chance now that they are doing a great job. A loyal fan would have pulled for the Titans and watched game classification essay on sports fans game after game, hoping that the Titans would do better and they would be proud now that the are playing so well.
A disloyal fan would wait until the Titans are one of the top teams in the league before they started rooting for them again. The third category is the bandwagon fan.
This is the type of fan that most sports fans have become at some point. For example, cheering on the unknown underdog is an example of someone becoming a bandwagon fan. Most sports fans classification essay on sports fans the story of the New England Patriots.
In the Patriots second regular season game, their starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe fell to injury, allowing a sixth round draft pick from to start. Tom Brady, the quarterback, classification essay on sports fans, took the underdog team to an finish and through the playoffs to become Super Bowl champions, classification essay on sports fans. The years since then have shown us that the Patriots are one of the best teams in the NFL.
The sports world has also seen how the Patriots are classification essay on sports fans one of the cockiest sports teams around.
It is one thing to like a team for one season because of their great story, but after all of this, people started becoming fans only because they are a winning classification essay on sports fans. This qualifies someone to be a bandwagon fan. Another example is the many fans that the Boston Red Sox have suddenly gotten all around the country. All of them are characteristics of either bandwagon, disloyal, and loyal fans. Some characteristics fit in more than one or all three of the categories. The one thing that all of these categories have in common is that all of them love the sport. Some people love it for the history.
